Sarala Devi
The pioneering social worker, women’s empowerment advocate, and founder of Sarala Punnyasram who devoted her life to the welfare, education, dignity, and independence of women.
A pioneer of women's welfare, education and empowerment.
Sarala Devi was a pioneering social worker who devoted her life to the welfare, education and empowerment of women at a time when women in Bengal faced severe social restrictions.
She believed that women needed not only protection and charity, but also education, dignity, independence and opportunities to shape their own lives. Her vision placed women's agency and self-reliance at the centre of social reform.
Creating a home where daughters could learn and lead.
Along with her husband, the distinguished educationist and Brahmo thinker Beni Madhab Das, Sarala Devi created an environment in which their daughters were encouraged to receive education and participate actively in public life.
Their family reflected a progressive approach to women's education and social participation. Sarala Devi's commitment to learning and independence extended beyond her own household and became part of her wider vision for the welfare and empowerment of women.
Her daughters, Kalyani Das and Bina Das, would later carry this spirit of courage and public engagement into India's freedom struggle.
An institution dedicated to the support and upliftment of women.
Sarala Devi established Sarala Punnyasram in Calcutta as an institution for the support and upliftment of women, particularly those who were vulnerable and without adequate family support.
The institution reflected her belief that meaningful social reform required more than temporary assistance. Women needed a secure environment in which they could pursue education, develop independence, preserve their dignity and build more self-directed lives.
Over time, Sarala Punnyasram also became associated with women connected with the freedom movement, adding another dimension to the institution's place in the social and historical life of Bengal.
A vision of women's empowerment carried forward by generations.
Sarala Devi's vision of women's empowerment became part of the family's larger legacy, inspiring a generation of women to pursue education, independence and public service.
Her daughters Kalyani Das and Bina Das went on to play significant roles in India's freedom struggle. Their public lives reflected the values of courage, education and social responsibility that Sarala Devi had fostered within her family.
Her work therefore extended beyond the institution she founded. Through her family and through Sarala Punnyasram, she helped create a lasting example of how women's education, dignity and independence could become essential parts of wider social transformation.
